Innovative Technology Enables More Natural Avatars in Simulations

New motion-capture technology enables collaboration in many applications.

Mechdyne Corporation has advanced their ConduitTM technology to allow multiple users wearing motion capture suits to "step inside" a virtual human, or avatar, and interact directly with data from a much more realistic simulation perspective.

Developed in partnership with Haption, this new solution enables a viewer to be "inside" a Dassault Systemes V5 avatar rather than "puppeteering" the human model from an outside perspective, as has been available in the past.

"Putting multiple users inside these avatars provides a collaborative environment for a work team to interact together like they would in the real world, reducing product and life cycle costs," says Matt Szymanski Vice President of Products for Mechdyne's Software Division. "This new capability is the result of direct requests by many of our industrial customers. The support for multiple users with first person viewing will prove especially valuable in testing, defining, and refining physical processes, as well as in training and simulation scenarios or ergonomic studies."

"This new level of motion capture support will allow multiple participants in a shared virtual environment to collaborate and interact with their engineering designs, assemblies, and process simulations, all from the first person perspective," says Jerome Perret, CEO of Haption.

Although motion capture capabilities have been utilized in immersive simulation environments for some time, Mechdyne's newly refined technology is comprised of the Multi"User option and Mannequin Tracker Module of their Conduit for V5 software. This paired with the IPSI Server and RTI Delmia software from Haption will enable users to collaborate and interact with their V5 designs for a multitude of business and research possibilities.

This innovative integration of technologies from Mechdyne and Haption will create more powerful and realistic simulations for assembly operations, aircraft maintenance, ergonomic testing, and reach studies. The multi user technology also creates collaborative learning scenarios that include more natural trainer/trainee sessions.

Mechdyne Corporation is dedicated to consulting and development of turnkey advanced Audio Visual (AV), immersive 3D, networked, and collaborative visualization solutions.

Mechdyne addresses complex projects where in"depth understanding of user requirements leads to the development of products and customized solutions involving elements of display, graphics computing, software, and professional services.

Mechdyne customers include government laboratories, Department of Defense (Army, Navy, Air Force), energy companies, universities and research labs, medical, manufacturing, and other users of advanced technology.

HAPTION designs, manufactures and sells 6DOF haptic devices and with professional quality, suited to the needs of its customers, both industrial and academic.
